Chapter 2 Draft (from Untitled Work #2)
Sep. 26th, 2011 04:37 pmIn the main chamber of the compound dwells the ruler of this entire nation. Consumed by military and politics he rules with hard work and determination. He gained control of the nation through strategy and conservative ideology. Man must build what they want with their own two hands. Man can only trust himself and with hard work, dedication, and duty a society can outshine all others. He stands 5’ 10” tall, his faced rigid with age. His eyes stern and rough, his body build tough from years of labor, although lately, he had begun to develop a gut from inactivity.
The man gained power naturally through the election of the people. He worked hard to gain their trust and establish connections with people. The people sought a strong man to lead them to a prosperous and safe nation. He is trusted and respected by the entire nation.
Today, the man speaks with his top military official.
“How are things going?” The ruler asked firmly.
“The soldiers are being pushed every day. They work hard to protect and serve their nation.” The military official, General Raphael reported.
“Good, are there any problems?”
“We have done our best to minimize insubordination and instill strict moral values in the soldiers and citizens of this nation.”
The ruler was pleased to hear this. The General continued.
“Everyone has respect for each other because of their time served in the military. Those who seem like they may be problematic are straightened out by the rigors of soldierly duties. Strong foundation of rules and regulations keeps our society stable.”
“Yes, only by experiencing a particular way of life can the newer generations grow to be as hard working as their elders.” The ruler stated. “And… what of him?”
General Raphael shuffled around in frustration.
“He is incredibly ungrateful. He refuses to listen fully to orders and lacks any form of pride or spirit. His insubordination is one of the worst cases I’ve ever experienced. I know he may be a special case but I fear that his will ultimately bring about the destruction of all we hold dear.”
The ruler sighed.
“I can’t bring myself to exile my own son. I shall have a talk with him.”
General Raphael gritted his teeth. He wanted nothing more than to bully that boy into the proper state of mind.
“I’ll take my leave then. I have another meeting to attend to, sir.”
General Raphael exited the chamber and ultimately the compound. He walked off towards the mountainous terrain, heading for the nation’s military headquarters. He was still frustrated by the ruler’s weakness. He would never allow such a problem to go unpunished. He would make a much better ruler. Soon he would get his chance though. He had his own trump card. On his way to the barracks he came across a familiar face.
Looking down at the city from the hilltop was Jace. He stood awestruck. He often came to this spot during his free time so he could look over the city, looking at what he didn’t have. He was always told that he would be too much of a liability to openly visit the city.
“Jace! What do you think you’re doing here!?” General Raphael screamed from behind him.
Jace didn’t have to turn to see who was behind him. He recognized that voce from so many times before. This man seemed to take special interest in him.
“What do you want?” Jace stated dully.
“Such disrespect! Is that how you were taught to address your superiors?”
“And just what is it that makes you superior?”
Jace turned to face the General.
“I’ve got much more life experience than you. I know how this world works. If you know what’s good for you, you won’t oppose the order of our society.” General Raphael stated.
“Right, let me tell you something. Your rank is nothing but a pretty little shape on your chest that seems to give you some kind of ego boost. We are both humans and therefore we are the same. Why should I be forced to follow you?”
“Such defiance, you can be sure you’ll get what’s coming to you, private. Tomorrow is the big military exercise. You better make sure you’re ready. Remember, you’re a soldier and you have a responsibility to respect your superiors and follow regulations.”
“Yeah well, I never asked to join this organization. It was your bright idea to make service mandatory.”
“So ungrateful, how well off are you and yet you refuse to give back to your community, your people. You have much to learn. Even if it kills you, I will make sure you understand your role.”
“Whatever, are we done?”
“Your father wishes to see you. You’re dismissed.”
“Great another useless lecture.”
With that Jace left, walking towards the compound.
General Raphael gritted his teeth. If there was anyone he hated more than the ruler, it was the ruler’s son. He had his own affairs to attend to now, but before long he would make sure that boy got what was coming to him.
Eventually the General reached the military base and his personal barracks. As he entered his room, his desk chair spun around revealing a dark figure.
“You’re late, how unlike you.” The figured said coolly.
“Yes, I was held up by your project.” General Raphael said.
“Jace? He seems hopeless as ever. It seems a waste to protect him. He would never make a fit ruler for this nation.” Gilford said.
“Yes, I agree and I have a plan to exile him from this nation. Then, with him gone, we shall be able to rise and take control of this nation making it truly the most powerful and respected nation in the world. Tomorrow, during the military exercise, I have an important task for you, Gilford…”
